"Why do you want to study Traditional Chinese Medicine?" I am often asked this question. This time, I would like to take the opportunity to share my story in more detail.
My interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) began when I was little, growing up in East Timor. I often watched my father making medical tonics, medicinal pastes, powders and tinctures from many different kinds of plants, seaweed and shells, to treat a wide range of ailments. I found these things utterly fascinating — and wished that one day I could do the same.
After Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975, East Timorese children were forced to study only Indonesian. I started Indonesian primary school at around age nine, and at ten was secretly sent to a private Chinese teacher to study elementary Chinese characters — Indonesian school in the morning, Chinese class in the afternoon. Unfortunately the classes only lasted about three years. When I arrived in Australia in 1987, I had not even completed year four of Indonesian school.
I came to Australia for a better future. With no English background and enormous language barriers, I studied with great determination. With hard work and patience, I achieved what I set out to achieve. All the hardships I endured were worthy in the end. I believe that anyone can achieve whatever they truly want to achieve.
I have since completed degrees in both Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine at Victoria University, and now formally practise both therapies. I believe both work beautifully on their own and enhance each other — matched to each individual patient's needs and preferences.
I have also furthered my studies in China, focusing on acupuncture and herbal medicine for tumours, gynaecology, paediatrics and traumatology. It is my honour to bring this ancient healing wisdom to my patients here in Melbourne.
